Following the inefficiencies identified in the FATF Mutual Evaluation of South Africa (October 2021), South Africa’s progress in putting measures in place to combat money laundering and financing of terrorism is being monitored and will be reviewed in October 2022. If the country’s progress in strengthening its regulatory and money laundering controls are found not to be satisfactory, South Africa could find itself on the FATF’s grey list.
Jeanine de Swardt-Breeds, Practice Management Consultant and Compliance Officer at Masthead, speaks about what it means for South Africa to be on the FATF’s grey list, the steps South Africa has been and are currently taking to reduce the risk of being grey listed, and more.
