The Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) has recently launched its upgraded goAML system, marking a significant milestone in South Africa’s efforts to combat financial crime. The new version, goAML 5.4, went live on 15 September 2025 following a scheduled downtime that began on 8 September 2025. This upgrade introduces a range of enhancements designed to improve the user experience and strengthen data security.
The goAML system is a critical tool used by accountable institutions and other stakeholders to register and maintain contact with the FIC, including submitting regulatory reports such as suspicious and unusual transaction reports (STRs), cash threshold reports (CTRs), and international funds transfer reports (IFTRs).
With the new upgrade, users can expect a more streamlined interface, improved productivity tools, customised reporting options that allow for tailored report types, variety of report formats and enhanced security features. These changes are aimed at reducing submission errors and ensuring that institutions can meet their compliance obligations more efficiently. The improved goAML platform also expands the FIC’s compliance and prevention capabilities and its ability to more efficiently filter and categorise information for analysis.
During the upgrade period, the FIC temporarily suspended access to the system to allow for a smooth transition. Now that the platform is fully operational, all institutions are required to resume their reporting activities without delay. The FIC has also committed to providing additional guidance for institutions that may need to catch up on submissions affected by the downtime, particularly those using business-to-business (B2B) reporting channels.
To support users in navigating the new system, the FIC has released updated technical documentation, user guides, and an engagement pack. These resources are intended to assist institutions in understanding the new features and ensuring compliance with the latest reporting standards.
The FIC encourages all stakeholders to familiarise themselves with the upgraded platform. This upgrade represents a proactive step in enhancing the integrity of South Africa’s financial system and reinforcing the country’s commitment to fighting money laundering, terrorist financing, and proliferation financing.
